In-Person: Meeting in the Jamie Gagarin Community Room
Non-Fiction Book Discussion Group: Meets at 2:00 PM
Featured book: Battle of Ink & Ice: A Sensational Story of News Barons, North Pole Explorers, and the Making of Modern Media by Darrell Hartman
The title and subtitle tell it all. The book presents a frank portrayal of Arctic explorers, brave men who both inspired and deceived the public. It also sketches a vivid portrait of the newspapers that funded, promoted, narrated, and often distorted their exploits.
Fiction Book Discussion Group: Meets at 3:30 PM
Featured book: Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke
The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city – intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began. But at what cost? As civilization approaches the crossroads, will the Overlords spell the end for humankind ... or the beginning? A classic of science fiction, this book raises fresh questions in this dawn of the use of artificial intelligence.

“Holler Rat,” Book Talk and Signing with Anya Liftig, Morris Public Library, Thursday, December 12, 6:30 PM.
From a critically acclaimed performance artist, a funny, vivid, and ultimately heartbreaking memoir about forging identity in the chasm between cultures and classes.
Anya Liftig grew up with a foot in two very different worlds: While her mother’s upbringing was so rural that the other kids called her “holler rat,” her father came from a comfortable, upper-middle-class Jewish family. Liftig spent school years in affluent Connecticut and summers in the holler. Shaped by the experience, she would go on to win a scholarship to Yale and become an acclaimed artist, using provocative performances to explore the contradictions and unanswered questions of her life. But when the world Liftig was building for herself shattered, she was forced to reconcile where she’d come from with who she was and who she wanted to be.
In Holler Rat (Abrams Press; August 15, 2023; Hardcover), Liftig masterfully interweaves family lore from her Appalachian childhood with her performance art pieces and scenes of the yearlong period in which her life fell apart and plumbs the cathartic self-reckoning that followed. She takes us from her Mamaw’s porch to Yale, from the site of a violent family land feud to a pre-gentrified Bushwick loft, and from a devastating childhood leg injury to having 243 raw eggs pelted at her in the name of art. In visceral, beautiful prose that ranges from raunchy and outrageous to sobering and tragic, Holler Rat is the origin story of an unconventional artistic life and a captivating account of the stumbling blocks, sacrifices, and discoveries along the way.

Torrington City Hall Hosts "Made In Torrington" Exhibit, Showcasing Local Industry and Artistry
The exhibit is open to the public in the City Hall Auditorium during normal hours when meetings are not in session.
Following a successful exhibit at Five Points Annex earlier this year, a curated selection from the original 65 works of local photographer Katina Hungerford are showcased at City Hall in the auditorium throughout October and November. This continuation of the “Made In Torrington” exhibit is curated and overseen by William Haygood, a key figure in Torrington's vibrant arts community, a member of Torrington's Arts and Culture Commission, Five Points Arts Facilities Manager, and art curator for City Hall.
"Made In Torrington" is a black-and-white, documentary-style photo exhibit dedicated to the workers, artisans, and everyday local heroes who make the Northwest corner of Connecticut an extraordinary haven of hard work, inspiration, and innovation. This project captures Torrington's hardworking spirit, bridging labor and artistry through striking portraits. Featured in the exhibit are craftsmen and women at work across various iconic Torrington locations, including O&G Industries at the new high school construction site, RBC Bearings, Iffland Lumber, The Nutmeg Conservatory for The Arts, WAPJ Radio Station, City Hall, Colonial Bronze, Liberty Art and Framing, Center Congregational Church, and The Venetian Restaurant. Each image reflects the pride and dedication of Torrington’s people, often working behind the scenes to keep the city thriving.
Several pieces from the collection will also be on display at local venues during the exhibit’s run. Upon the completion of the exhibit series, the full body of work will be donated to the Torrington Historical Society, ensuring this powerful visual documentation of Torrington’s industrious spirit is preserved for future generations.
About the Artist: Katina Hungerford is a renowned photographer and local artist who grew up in Torrington and resides in the city with her musician husband, Steven McGrath. With the support of a microgrant from the Northwest CT Arts Council, The City of Torrington, and The American Rescue Plan Act, Katina has documented the hardworking spirit of Torrington in “Made In Torrington.”
For more information about the Made In Torrington Art Exhibit, including a full schedule of events, please visit the digital exhibit on Facebook at facebook.com/madeintorrington or contact Katina Hungerford at katina@hungerford.marketing.

The Gunn Memorial Library Stairwell Gallery is pleased to present "Light, Color, and Mood," a solo show by Sergio Villaschi on display from November 30 through January 27.
In Light, Color, and Mood, Sergio Villaschi takes an artistic approach to photography, using light, color, and texture to create compelling still life and landscape images. Inspired by the mosaics and frescoes of his native Rome, Sergio's work blurs the line between traditional photography and fine art, giving each piece a distinct atmosphere and depth. His still life compositions are vibrant and layered, while his landscapes capture a quiet, serene quality.
Through techniques like "light painting" and Intentional Camera Movement, Sergio enhances his images with unique textures and moods. He invites viewers to see familiar subjects in a new way, with each photo offering a refined and thoughtful perspective.

Connections: an exhibit of oil and mixed media by the artists Souby Boski and Karen Simmons.
Souby Boski has been an Art teacher in the Connecticut public schools and Adjunct Professor of Art at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Since 2004, she has been teaching painting and ceramics at area art education venues in CT, NY, MA and Florida. Souby holds a BA in Art Education from Stetson University and a MALS in Art from Wesleyan University. She has studied painting with nationally recognized artists and teachers, like Eric Aho, Ira Barkoff, Lois Dodd and Ruth Miller.
Karen Simmons grew up in France, London and Brussels. Her parents were friends with several contemporary artists, from whom she absorbed a love of all things beautiful into the most humble of daily details. She holds a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Williams College and a Master in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Karen has studied painting under Ira Barkoff and Eric Aho, sculpture under Mary Adams and John Reideman.
Karen states: "the "Connections" of this show continue and get personal, especially in my still-lives, which often include familial objects, many from my mother's collection. My still-lives build on each other by including the same objects, also prior still life paintings that become abstracted objects, paintings of my studio "object libraries" and finally, sometimes, abstractions of the still life itself."
Both artists have participated in many exhibitions as well as in group shows all over Litchfield County and beyond.
For over 18 years, Karen and Souby have been connected through painting, classes, teaching, volunteering and friendship. The exhibition is a result of the dialog between these women as they work to explore painting through color and abstraction.
Connections: Souby Boski and Karen Simmons
In his latest exhibition, Don Sexton, award-winning Goshen artist, shows places around the world where people – kids and adults - have fun. His paintings include fairs such as the World Famous Goshen Fair, the Big E in West Springfield, and the Taste of Tribeca in New York City, and amusement parks such as Playland in Rye, Luna Park in Sydney, and Disney in Shanghai. Kids will enjoy the fairs and amusement parks but his works also include places where adults have fun such as Torrington’s Warner Theater, the Las Vegas Strip, the Paris Left Bank, and New York’s Time Square.
Don’s images are realistic and he employs color to make them intriguing and memorable. He paints with either of two approaches: oils or mixed media. His oils are traditional. The mixed media technique works are based on a special approach which he developed many years ago and involve both watercolors and oil pastels. The combination of water and oil produce vivid colors. Guests at his shows always enjoy his bright colors. They call him the “color magician.”

November 12, 2024 – February 9, 2025'At First Light: American Tonalism' showcases a critical era of late 19th and early 20th century landscape painting. Responding to the trauma of the Civil War and taking aesthetic inspiration from the French Barbizon and American Hudson River Schools, artists began to depict the landscape using loose brushstrokes and subdued colors. These techniques gave the movement its name and created hazy and dreamlike compositions that captured the qualities of light at dawn and dusk. Featuring the work of 17 artists alongside historic objects and archival material from the period, this exhibition explores how artists painting in the Tonalist style uniquely perceived and depicted the American landscape.

A Christmas Carol published in 1843, was the sixth of Charles Dicken’s twenty major works. His final work Edwin Drood was left half finished when Dickens died in 1870.
Charles Dickens gave his first public reading of A Christmas Carol on Dec. 3, 1867 at the Tremont Temple in Boston. On Christmas Eve, 1867 in Boston, a businessman named Fairbanks watched Charles Dickens read A Christmas Carol. The reading moved him so much he closed his factory on Christmas Day and sent every worker a turkey thereafter.
Bill Hughes's reading is gently abridged for dramatic purpose from the restructured version Dickens created for his own United States reading tour of 1867/1868, which included stops in New Haven and Hartford in 1868 with readings of A Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens about Ebenezer Scrooge, an old man who is well-known for his miserly ways. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by a series of ghosts, starting with his old business partner, Jacob Marley. The three spirits that follow, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come, show Scrooge how his mean behavior has affected those around him. At the end of the story, he is relieved to discover that there is still time for him to change, and we see him transformed into a generous and kind-hearted human being.

For the first time, Poskas: Father and Son brings together the artwork of Waterbury natives Peter Poskas II and his son Peter Poskas III. Poskas II is known for painting realist views of Connecticut cities and landscapes, exploring conditions of weather and light on his subjects. Dedicated to realist still lifes before a life-altering accident, Poskas III has recently turned his attention to impressionistic views of the land, animals, and buildings surrounding his Washington, CT farm. A wide-ranging retrospective of late-career Poskas II, and mid-career Poskas III, this exhibition not only speaks to the body of work of both artists, but also tracks how their relationship has changed, grown, and deepened over time through the lens of their artwork.

Federico Uribe pairs form and unexpected materials to create imaginative and captivating sculptural assemblages. Highlighting his treatment of animals and the landscapes they inhabit, Federico Uribe: Menagerie offers a playful yet substantive perspective on the natural world. With a wry sense of humor, objects like Bambi made from bullets and Screwed Panda invite questions about the extractive relationship humans have established with animals and the land we all call home.
