Description

Former NY Times illustrator, David Suter has a long history of making complicated events easier for us to understand - from sketching the Watergate trials to illustrating the infamous O-Ring malfunction of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Yet, the impact of the artist’s recognizable illustrations from the 70s and 80s beyond their brilliant use of space and optical illusion to present multiple narratives is that they often speak to political, socio economic and universal themes that are as relevant today as they were then. His sculpture and painting take these unique "Suterisms" and adapt them successfully into three dimensions.

The Hen’s Nest Gallery presents a one-of-a-kind collection of all of this artwork, including over 100 original drawings from September 18th through October 27th.  The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 28th, 4:00-6:00.

The image of a pistol embedded subtly into the “P” of “We The People” in a drawing of the United States Constitution or a silhouette of a curtain that reveals itself to be two figures gazing at the viewer are just a couple of examples of how David Suter’s drawings invite you to look twice. But, it’s often on the second, third or seventh look that you might recognize a broader philosophical idea or implication that he’s distilling down for you. Colleagues have lauded his “exquisite mind” for his keen ability to transcend the obvious and find deeper meaning for the stories he illustrates.

Per Suter: “In my graphic works, I have tried to find those views of events, those cutting angles which preserve a residuum of higher dimensions. In some cases there is an echo of symbolism or history, in others the simple sense of a revealed, normally suppressed side to everyday objects.”

It is this sense of higher dimensions pervading his work that make his drawings timeless and relevant not only to our current political environment and the state of the world, but to our own understanding of ourselves.

About the Artist

David Suter was born in Bethesda, Maryland in 1949 to a CIA analyst father and an artist mother, and as a result was surrounded by politics and art at a very young age. His art career began when after two years as a draftsman in the US Army, Suter was hired to cover the Watergate trials for The Washington Post under editor Ben Bradlee who had seen some of his drawings. He later moved to New York City, becoming a prominent illustrator for The New York Times Op-Ed, Book Review and Science sections with featured work in The Atlantic, Harper’s, The LA Times and many other publications. For the past several years, he has focused primarily on sculpture and painting. His work can be found in private collections and select galleries in the US and Europe. The artist currently resides in Rensselaerville, NY.
