**_The Ghost Net: An Environmental Musical of the Sea_** at  **The Mattatuck Museum**  on Saturday,  May 11th at 1 pm _ 12:00 noon Pre-Performance Drama Workshop to perform in the Show!_ _ _  On Saturday, May11th at 12:00 pm. Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater will conduct a pre-performance theater workshop for ages 6 & up to become part of the show and perform with Grumbling Gryphons in excerpts from their musical and dramatic production of  **_The Ghost Net_: _An Environmental Musical of the Sea._**        Leslie Elias-Artistic director and her troupe of actors will train workshop participants to perform with the troupe at 1 pm.  Children  will learn dramatic roles such as: “ **_Trash Creatures_** ,” and perform “ **_The Slimy Sludge Rap” _** and dance and sing calypso  as  **_“Tropical Fish_** ” in the coral reef.  Join King Neptune and The Mermaid Queen who sing the “ **_The Ocean Blues” _**  and **_ _** plunge into fun and fantasy as a myriad of manatees, minnows, tropical fish and more will be brought to life in this environmental production, which celebrates our planet’s fragile marine life. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Brian Bender, award winning keyboardist and trombonist from Massachusetts. Actors Daniel Saed, Natalie Resto and Leslie Elias along with workshop participants will enact this captivating tale of the sea.   **_The Ghost Net_: _An Environmental Musical of the Sea_**  was developed in cooperation with environmentalists and marine biologists dedicated to protecting marine wildlife. It premiered in 1990 as part of an environmental expo “_The Visit of the Mimi” _held at Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, CT, which thousands of elementary and middle school children attended. With the invaluable input by marine biologist Barbara Whitman and other environmental educators, writer and director-Leslie Elias, created a play that has served as a powerful vehicle for promoting awareness of our planet’s rapidly depleting oceans and endangered marine life.   Since 1990,   **_The Ghost Net_**  has toured the United States, receiving rave reviews for its beautiful artistry and timely message. Humor and music abound in this powerful story of a brave, teenaged girl and her fantastic voyage into the sea. Deep in the ocean, she befriends sea animals, encounters manmade hazards and helps the marine creatures battle the perils of pollution. With the help of the audience, Marina is able to rid the ocean of the menacing ghost net and save the humpback whale entrapped in the deadly drift net.    Through this play, the children will learn about the beautiful world of marine life and experience the dangers it faces; plastic, oil and drift net pollution. By learning first-hand about the various animals in peril : a seagull whose wing is caught in plastic fishing line, tropical caught in six pack rings, turtles choking on plastic bags and ultimately the grandmother whale caught in the ghost net, the audience develops greater empathy and awareness of the plight of these creatures. During the show the audience will actively engage in positive solutions, such as recycling and working together to become stewards of the earth and help save our fragile oceans.    Masks, costumes and puppets are created by artists Ellen Moon, Jude Streng and Louise Krozek. Sixty of the ocean costumes were featured in New York City’s 25th Anniversary of Earth Day. In Florida, The Grumbling Gryphons performances were instrumental in helping to get Amendment Three passed, which enforced the banning of net fishing.  **_The Ghost Net_**  was chosen to be the kickoff event for New England’s Coast Weeks as part of the  **_National Beach Cleanup Campaign_**. Says David Brown of Miami, “As an environmental educator and a marine science instructor, I have not been able to find a program of comparable quality.”       Winner of the 2003 Connecticut Governor’s Arts Award, Grumbling Gryphons has been enchanting and delighting audiences throughout the world for 44 years. Known for their fantastic masks, captivating costumes and joyful interaction with children, their multicultural, mythological and environmental stories teach the hearts, minds and imaginations of children and adults alike.   “ A magical weave of storytelling, music, mythology and masks...” _New York Times_ _ “_One of the most innovative and inspirational participation troupes in the United States.”- Patricia Forrest, publisher of New Plays Inc.

The Hickory Stick Bookshop is delighted to host author Jack Sheedy who will be here to sign copies of his new book “In My Father’s Tire Tracks” on Saturday May 11th at 3 pm.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Why does a man jump into a new Thunderbird in December 1959 and drive across the U.S., vowing to his wife and young children, "I'll be home for Christmas"?  And why, more than six decades later, does his son, the author of this thoughtful road trip memoir, decide to retrace those tire tracks city by city?  As you ride along with both men on their separate but congruent journeys, watch as the author makes surprising connections with his father across the gulf of time.  Was that his father's Thunderbird he just spotted?  Who does he speak to under a salmon-colored sky in New Mexico?  Can two people truly see and experience the same things through different lenses and in different millennia?  The answers may surprise you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jack Sheedy is the author of "Sting of the Heat Bug," "Magical Acts in Two Suitcases" and "It Bears Repeating: Twice-Told Tales of John P. Sheedy."  He is a feature writer, hard news reporter, essayist, and playwright.  His honors include awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the New England Newspaper and Press Association; in 2000, his play "Guardrail Nikes," was a winner in the Connecticut One-Act Play Festival competition.  His articles have appeared in numerous regional and state publications and have been syndicated on Catholic News Service.  Sheedy is an award-winning correspondent for the Catholic Transcript, the magazine of the Archdiocese of Hartford.  He lives in northwestern Connecticut.

This event is free and open to the public.  If you are unable to attend this event, you may reserve signed copies of “In My Father’s Tire Tracks” by calling The Hickory Stick Bookshop at (860) 868 0525

In May, the David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village (CT) will host the exhibition A Star Danced: The Paintings of Mary Anne Carley and Theresa Kenny. The exhibition features the work of two Sharon-based painters who happen to be mother and daughter. Mary Anne Carley uses a multitude of media in her abstract and impressionist paintings and monoprints including acrylic, watercolor, and ink. Carley’s daughter, Theresa Kenny, focuses on figurative works in pastel that capture the color and movement of birds, animals, and children. The exhibition’s title is from Shakespeare and evokes the astrological happiness of a star at the birth of a daughter. It will be on display at the library during operating hours through June 7.

Whittemore Gallery

January 21, 2024 – May 19, 2024

(Re)Work It! Women Artists on Women’s Labor explores the many types of labor that women are often expected to manage – from caring for one’s family to participating in the labor force, from negotiating beauty standards to handling emotional labor, and more. A reprisal of a smaller exhibition from 2022, this new show delves more deeply into the topic by incorporating a wider range of voices and perspectives. Including artwork from approximately 30 contemporary female-identifying artists, (Re)Work It! broadens our definition and understanding of women's labor in 21st century America.

Kenise Barnes Fine Art is pleased to announce the representation and first solo show of accomplished mid-career artist KK Kozik.

“As to me," wrote Walt Whitman in 1881, "I know of nothing else but miracles.” Whitman goes on to list some very ordinary phenomena as miracles, from “stars shining quiet and bright,” to standing under trees in the woods, to observing birds in flight. The vein of American mysticism links the natural world with the spiritual and has found form in artists as disparate as Rockwell Kent and Agnes Pelton and KK Kozik: all artists who process what they see, what they experience and what they imagine into a painted image.

Kozik’s minor miracles mostly surface from the rhythms of her day. Prosaic encounters of beauty during hikes, strolls and swims simmer on the back burner of her mind until stirred up and warmed they knock on her door, demanding to be painted. Ideas and images never come out quite the way they went into the pot. Kozik is not a realist, slavishly painting a tree branch by branch, but rather a transcendental hunter-gatherer, a sly burglar of ideas and colors. An island of trees in a lake is what was seen, but Miracle Island is what she painted. The artist releases beauty from the prosaic, her work meeting in the center of the everyday world and the way imagination processes memory and the way her hand executes it.

KK Kozik’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States, Greece, Netherlands, and Germany. She has been honored with William and Susan Picotte Award, Albany Institute of History and Art, Connecticut Artist Fellowship in Painting, Commission, “Flights of Imagination,” Fitchburg Art Museum and Fitchburg State University, Commission, MTA Arts & Design, Rockaway Park Beach 116th St subway station, Weir Farm Trust Visiting Artist Fellowship, Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Grant, to name a few. The artist’s work has been featured in The New York Times, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, and Art in America among others. KK Kozik earned an MA from Syracuse University, a BA from University of Virginia, and attended Edinburgh University. She lives and works in CT.

Please contact Lani Holloway, Associate Director, Lani@kbfa.com, 860 560 3085 with inquires or to arrange a preview of the exhibition.

From April 13 through May 18, The Cornwall Library is presenting Live It Up!, a selection of bold, vivid landscape and abstract works by artist Joelle Sander (1942–2023) that fully justify the name of the show. The opening reception on April 13 from 5 to 7 pm, with registration requested at https://cornwalllibrary.org/events/.

Sander was already an award-winning author in her late 40s when she began painting seriously. She pursued painting with characteristic zeal, putting it on equal footing with writing, and attending studio classes in New York until the week before her passing. Early on, she took to heart a comment by artist Wolf Kahn, who noticed in one of her pastels an unusual color choice. "Ah ha," he said, "You see, you are a colorist!"

Steve Ninteman, a fellow artist and friend, says “Color is what Joelle celebrated the most in all her work. She also pursued themes of movement, fire, scale, trees and light. What is inspiring is that she took whatever idea she was interested in and brought it directly to a large canvas. Joelle did lovely personal drawings around her Connecticut home, in museums and Central Park, but she didn't do many preparatory sketches for paintings. Instead she would make a few simple outlines with her brush and dive in. Her color choices appeared quickly in assured passages…Looking at her surroundings with love and attention, Joelle transformed them with her personal form making, then gave them a life of their own with color choices that only she could imagine. ”

Sander was inspired by painters as diverse as turn-of-the-20th-century Canadian landscapist Tom Thomson and American abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell.

She lived in New York City and West Cornwall, Connecticut. Live it Up! will offer oil paintings for sale, with proceeds benefiting art and poetry programs at The Cornwall Library.

“Atmospheric Abstractions”

Presented by: Edward Muszala

Edward Muszala will be sharing his extraordinary collection of oil paintings. His work will be on display from Saturday, March 23rd -  Saturday, May 18th 2024.

Pilot and artist, Edward Muszala, finds inspiration in the sky. “As a pilot I was aware of the constantly changing play of air and light in the atmosphere, the warmth of the sun, the speed of the wind, the water in the clouds” he says. Through the lens of a seasoned aviator, he captures the ever-shifting tapestry of light, color, and temperature in the atmosphere, translating this awe-inspiring spectacle onto canvas with his mastery of oil and encaustic techniques bringing these atmospheric scenes to life, evoking feelings of calm and awe in every brushstroke.

"Tangled in Color": an exhibition of works in oil and acrylic by Kathleen L'Hommedieu.

Kathleen L'Hommedieu, born and raised in Connecticut, finds inspiration through light and color in the landscape and sky. Many years of traveling for business and rowing competitions through Europe are also a major influence.

"We are immersed in light, color and energy from all that surrounds us no matter where we find ourselves."

Layering is nothing new for Kathleen. It is a technique that comes naturally as she builds a canvas and is guided through its evolution. Using a series of tools - from brush to palette knife - she lets the layers deepen, a process that can take years while perfecting a canvas. "The background tells me where to go," is how she explains the method, "and I add color or texture." Recently, the layers have led to new revelations of shadow and light as the colors intermingle and intertwine, creating interrelationships within a work of art informed by past canvases. Her abstracts are often memories of moments she has experienced - inspired by a foggy window after a storm by the sea, the turbulence of winter by the ocean, a still-life in its vivid interplay of color and form, or a grove of young saplings lit by the sun.

This show is a series of explorations in interwoven color to share the journey of an artist's growing perception, but expressing a universal message. Kathleen's quest leads the viewer to experience a deepening vision of fleeting color play and brilliant moments in our surroundings. "Art teaches you to see," she says, "and I strive to capture that energy."

The Gunn Memorial Library in collaboration with The Hickory Stick Bookshop presents an author talk with Karen Chase, “_History is Embarrassing.”_ In her collection of essays, Karen Chase weaves together threads from one single contemporary life and recounts how that life collides with history. As a girl with polio, a Jewish woman, poet, writer, and painter, the author is an outsider as are most of the characters in these pages - undercover cops, poets, a gay couple in 1500s India, bear poachers, psychiatric patients, even a president. Each of these characters is one tiny dot in the enormous flow of humans from the beginning until now. Each life is equally a story that adds to the human story, to history. What binds the characters all together is her distinct voice, the startling directness, immediacy, and intensity of her writing, and her fearlessness to go wherever her interests and imagination take her. Yet there are no easy conclusions or phony epiphanies here, no designs on the reader, but instead many surprises. Chase prizes authenticity and has it in spades.   **About the author:** Karen Chase is the author of two collections of poems, Kazimierz Square and BEAR, as well as Jamali Kamali, a book-length homoerotic poem that takes place in Mughal India. Her award-winning book Land of Stone, tells the story of her work with a silent young man in a psychiatric hospital where she was the hospital poet. Her childhood bout with polio sparked her memoir Polio Boulevard, as well as FDR on His Houseboat: The Larooco Log, 1924-1926. She and her husband live in western Massachusetts.  Visit her online at [www.karenchase.com](http://www.karenchase.com) **Registration is required:_ _** **_[www.gunnlibrary.org](http://www.gunnlibrary.org/programs)_**

Cassatt & Company: The Women Impressionists

The visual arts revolution that was Impressionism is, too often, only understood only through the lens of the leading male practitioners - Monet, Renoir and Degas. How did the women Impressionists contribute to this novel style and how did their work differ from their male contemporaries? This program explores the paintings of Marie Bracquemond, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and others and considers the unique challenges they faced as women artists in a male-dominated profession.

Frida Kahlo: Love, Pain and Painting

Frida Kahlo has become a household name in recent years, with movies, books and countless products dedicated to her art and likeness. This program will go beyond the artist’s famous facial hair and penetrating stare and explore her life and her work, particularly as it relates to the trolley accident she survived as a teen and her passionate and often tumultuous marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera.
