EXHIBIT TO FEATURE THREE LOCAL ARTISTS

(New Preston, Connecticut) – The Smithy Café & Market is pleased to announce an art exhibit to be displayed September 1 to October 31, 2025, titled Perception and Perspective: Three Artists-Becky Butler, Sandra Daignault and Lucy C. Pierpont.

Join us for a collaboration of three women and their varying forms of artwork, style, and perspectives.

The three artists have painted together for several years using a variety of mediums. They have formed friendships and enjoy working together while sharing ideas and support.

Becky Butler founded the not-for-profit, Arts Escape in Southbury in 2012. Arts Escape’s mission was to focus on arts education for adults. After witnessing firsthand how art created camaraderie and joy with those who participated, it was time for Becky to do the same. She retired in 2022 to follow her own art journey. She has been taking painting classes in Abstract, Pastel and Acrylics for the past two years and is excited to keep learning and exploring new mediums. Her pastel, Tethered Beauty, was accepted into a National Pastel show and she also won Best in Show for mixed media in Roxbury’s Art at the Meeting House show in 2024 for Somewhere Out There. Becky lives in Woodbury, Connecticut with her husband Paul.

“I love working in pastels – the colors are limitless and immediate. My pastel paintings are primarily painted realistically. Breaking the barriers of painting realistically has been a challenge. My love for color has recently launched my exploration in creating abstract work. Using color and mark making intuitively is exciting and challenging as well as inspiring. During my exploration I found the medium of oil and cold wax. While having no expectations as to the outcome of my work, my eyes have opened to a whole new world of creativity. I love the freedom of experimentation and the joy of playing. I want my work to reflect my emotional insight into today’s world while uncovering the beauty that still exists,”  explains Becky.

Sandra Daignault, a Woodbury resident, was the Fine Arts Director at Arts Escape, Inc in Southbury, CT and teaches classes in acrylic painting. Her artwork has been shown in galleries and organizations across CT (Stamford, Litchfield, Washington, New Milford, Brookfield, Bantam, Ridgefield, West Hartford, Southbury, Rowayton, Newtown), as well as having a permanent piece at the US Headquarters of Jägermeister in Westchester County. In addition, she has published two books of poetry with illustrations and has recently published a climate change fiction novel. Visit her website at sdaignaultfineart.com.

“My painting process is all about creating an open mind and letting go. While I often do not have a predetermined subject I am always influenced by my fascination with our place in the universe. Letting go of preconceived forms allows for the mystery and essence that makes up everything around us. While my influences are abstract artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, contemporary Peter Wileman as well as English romantic artist (JW Turner) I strive to create from the words of favorite poets (Pablo Neruda, Wislawa Szymborska, Mary Oliver). It will please me if viewers respond with wonder and wanting( not knowing what),” states Sandra.

Woodbury resident, Lucy C. Pierpont has worked in the marketing/graphic design field ever since graduating from Hartwick College as an art major. She has created art her whole life and has had her photographs and paintings displayed in exhibits at the Mattatuck Museum, Majors Inn, Hartwick College, Oneonta Art Association, Kent Art Association, Washington Art Association, Burnham Library, Kent Memorial Library Art at the Meetinghouse, Ridgefield Art Walk, Flanders Nature Center and now, The Smithy. She currently works part-time with the Kent Memorial Library and the Washington Depot Office of Klemm Real Estate doing graphic design & public relations. Her artwork can be viewed at lucypierpont.carrd.co. Her graphic designs for the Kent Memorial Library have been the recipient of eight Connecticut Library Association Publicity Awards in recognition of design, marketing, and publicity created to promote a Library service or event.

“From my earliest recollections, art has always been in the forefront. I chose the graphic design route and spent my career in it. Now art embodies my life- through friends, work, play, and travel!” claims Lucy.

Please join us for a reception on Saturday, October 11 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please call the Smithy at (860) 868-9003 or go to their website at thesmithymarket.com.

Jon Brunelle will present a brief history of the craft of illusory magic together with a sleight-of-hand demonstration, while taking a look at how magicians’ control of information and secrecy has changed over time. Jon practiced sleight-of-hand magic professionally during the 1970’s and ’80s, winning First Prize in a national close-up magic competition held by the Society of American Magicians in 1978. During his later career, he presented satiric slideshow lectures in collaboration with New York’s electronic music and video artists. His solo show, Better Love Through Surveillance, had successful stagings in downtown New York theaters during the 2010’s. Jon is retired and lives full-time in Norfolk.

Presented by Rabbi Andrea Cohen Kiener

AM Session:

World faiths and psychological analyses all agree: Communication expresses the real intention of the speaker and is the main tool we have to communicate, confront and persuade. We all know this and we all know that it can be hard. Sometimes we need to adjust, not just our words, but our inner intention, to formulate a question that can open and touch the heart of the other person.

During the morning session, we will review some of the rich and varied religious and psychological teachings about effective communication. Applying these teachings can affect not only the person we are speaking to. It can also help us center, know ourselves and speak the truth; a true tool for evolution.

PM Session:

In the afternoon we will practice some of the theory we learned in the morning session. We will experience exercises for asking open-ended questions, compassionate confrontation, and preparing ourselves for difficult conversations.

Lunch is included.

The dramatic story of Dan Rather and his CBS News team’s courageous coverage of the Tiananmen Square uprising and subsequent crackdown represents a pinnacle in television news’ ability to provide live reporting of unfolding events on the world stage. Although CBS News delved into the Tiananmen Square story without hesitation, it was the obvious bravery of the Chinese student leaders in the face of their government’s growing impatience that grabbed the world’s attention. This film will be introduced by its director, Bestor Cram.

Properly photographing your artwork is critical when building an archive and submitting to calls for work. Lighting, background, angle and color balance are things that can often be overlooked by those unfamiliar with the photographic process. This practical workshop will show you what’s involved in making good images of both 2D and 3D artwork. Smartphones, DSLRs, scanners, and digital editing software will be among the tools covered.

The Choice-Based Classroom

Reimagine Your Art Room with TAB

Empower your students to think like artists, not just create art, with the Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) approach. Join the first TAB Professional Development Workshop in Connecticut for K–12 art educators—and make your classroom a truly choice-based classroom.

Teaching Art for the Future

Foster student agency and creativity.

Transform your art room into a vibrant, student-centered studio that mirrors real-world artistic practices. TAB empowers students to take ownership of their learning—exploring, ideating, and innovating along the way.

Build lifelong skills.

With TAB, students engage in artistic thinking, fostering critical skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and reflection.

Create inclusive and innovative art programs.

Integrate contemporary practices, such as Social-Emotional Learning (SEL); Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM); and culturally responsive teaching to develop art education that celebrates diversity and innovation.

Workshop Highlights

  • Innovative Teaching Strategies
  • Learn how to turn your classroom into a choice-based, student-centered studio where process takes precedence over product.
  • Hands-On Studio Experience
  • Participate in practical, classroom-ready TAB lessons and leave inspired to implement them immediately.
  • Curriculum Development Support
  • Collaborate with peers to develop resources that align with standards and meet the needs of your students.
  • Expert Guidance
  • Work with renowned TAB educator Jennifer Ferrari to explore best practices, assessment tools, and techniques that cultivate lifelong creativity.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is perfect for both new and experienced K–12 visual art educators looking to integrate TAB or who want to enhance their current practice by making art education more dynamic and student-driven.

The TAB Workshop at AMP

This workshop is a chance to reimagine the way you teach, inspire your students, and invigorate your classroom. Be part of the first TAB workshop in Connecticut and leave ready to empower your students as artists in a truly dynamic learning environment.

Coming to Light tells the dramatic story of Edward S. Curtis, a complicated, passionate, self-educated pioneer and visionary artist who set out in 1900 to document traditional Native American life before it was gone. He created an astonishing body of work: thousands of wax recordings, a full length motion picture with Kwakiutl people, twenty volumes of text, and forty thousand photographs. The film explores the often controversial nature of Curtis’ romantic images, and the meaning they have for Native Americans today. In the documentary, Hopi, Navajo, Cupig, Blackfeet, Piegan, Crow, Suquamish, Kwakiutl and Gros Ventre people, descendants of Curtis’ photographic subjects, tell stories about the people in the pictures, and describe ways in which they are using the photographs to revive their own traditions in the modern world. The film will be introduced by director Anne Makepeace.

A welcoming, drop-in teen art studio—where you can explore new materials, make friends, and grow as an artist.

Creative exploration and community go hand in hand at Teen Art Studio (TAS) for ages 13 to 18. Guided by a teaching artist, you can try new materials, develop your own ideas, and connect with others in a relaxed environment. It’s a space to grow as an artist and have fun doing it.

Come as you are. No pressure, just possibilities.

Every Second Saturday of the month, the studio becomes a creative zone where you can try something new, meet people who get you, and see your ideas come to life—with guidance from a teaching artist and no pressure to be perfect.

Come once or as often as you like.

Teen Art Studio is a drop-in program, so you can come once or as often as you like. Many teens return month after month to build skills, portfolios, and friendships. Teaching artist Shana Bazelmans brings experience, guidance, and creative prompts to help your ideas take shape. It’s not just about making art—it’s about feeling seen and inspired.

Reserve your spot—it helps us prep materials, and you can still drop in if you decide last-minute.

A madcap musical comedy, Lucky Stiff, written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, isWeekend at Bernie’s meets You’ve Got MailLucky Stiff tells the story of Harry, an English shoe salesman who receives the unexpected news that he has inherited a fortune from his late Uncle Anthony, on the condition that he takes his uncle’s dead body on a special trip to Monte Carlo. If Harry refuses to fulfill all his uncle’s last wishes exactly, the inheritance will go to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn. It doesn’t help matters that Rita, Tony’s lover with whom he embezzled $6 million behind her husband’s back, and her brother Vinnie, who she blamed for the crime, have their own schemes to get at the money. Based on the novel The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo by Michael Butterworth, Lucky Stiff is a life-affirming comedy served up with a dash of danger featuring romance, disguises, farcical chases, and an omnipresent corpse.

Featuring a tuneful score by Stehen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (songwriting team of Ragtime, Seussical, and Once On This Island), and an ensemble cast of zany characters, Lucky Stiff is an audience charmer.

Presenter Jane O’Neail will present 4 separate lectures:

Oct. 1: Impossible Realities: The Art of M.C. Escher

M.C. Escher, the Dutch graphic artist, was a master of mind-bending creations, blending art and mathematics. Born in 1898, Escher's journey from a struggling student to a renowned artist is as fascinating as his intricate lithographs and woodcuts. This program will explore Escher's life, his unique artistic vision, and the mathematical concepts that underpin his most famous works, offering a glimpse into the imagination of one of the 20th century's most innovative artists.

Rest on series:

September 3: From the enigmatic gaze of Rembrandt to the bold brushstrokes of Van Gogh, self-portraits have long captivated both artists and viewers alike. This exhibition traces the evolution of the genre from the Renaissance to the present day, showcasing works by masters such as Frida Kahlo, Egon Schiele, and Cindy Sherman. How did the advent of photography in the 19th century influence the way artists portrayed themselves? Explore the changing notions of identity, self-expression, and artistic technique across five centuries of visual storytelling.

Nov. 12: The Swirling World of Art Nouveau

Have you ever been captivated by the sinuous curves and organic forms of Art Nouveau? This enchanting artistic movement, which flourished from the 1890s to the 1910s, revolutionized visual arts and architecture with its emphasis on natural shapes, flowing lines, and decorative elegance. At the forefront of this style was Alphonse Mucha, a Czech artist whose iconic posters and illustrations epitomized the grace and beauty of Art Nouveau. This program explores the key characteristics of Art Nouveau and delves into Mucha's masterful works, uncovering how his distinctive style influenced not only graphic design but also the architecture and interior decor of the era.

Dec. 10: Behind the Curtain: Edgar Degas, the Ballet & Beyond

Discover the captivating world of Edgar Degas, a master of Impressionism known for his intimate portrayals of ballet dancers and everyday Parisian life. Through his innovative use of pastels and unconventional compositions, Degas captured fleeting moments with remarkable clarity and emotion. His works, ranging from elegant

ballerinas to candid scenes at the racetrack, offer a unique glimpse into 19th-century French society.

Imagine a scene never before witnessed: sixteen French pastry chefs gathered in Lyon for three intense days of mixing, piping, and sculpting everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot sugar sculptures in hopes of being declared by President Nicolas Sarkozy one of the best. This is the prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France). The blue, white and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the winners is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef – it is a dream and an obsession. Filmmakers D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus secured exclusive access to shoot this epic, never-before-filmed test of France’s finest artisans. The film will be introduced by its producer Flora Lazar.

The Machine has forged a 30+ year reputation of extending the musical legacy of Pink Floyd. The New York-based quartet performs a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems.

With stellar musicianship and passionate delivery, The Machine explores collective improvisation rivaling that of an early 1970’s Pink Floyd, while their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays and lighting continues The Floyd spirit of the 1980’s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A – Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet.

The Machine has sold out theaters, premier showcase rooms and casinos across North America, Europe and Asia, performed at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, and Gathering of the Vibes, and shared the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Charlotte and San Diego Symphonies, as well as the Buffalo Philharmonic.

The band features founding member Tahrah Cohen (drums), longtime bandmates Scott Chasolen (keys, vocals) and Ryan Ball (guitar, vocals), and newest member Chris DeAngelis (bass, lead vocals). The band continues on to celebrate the music of Pink Floyd and to honor the life of Joe Pascarell, who co-founded the band with Tahrah in 1988.

Participants do not need special skills to take this drawing workshop. Every exercise will be inherently accessible, rooted in our daily experience (what comes naturally) and the focus will be on getting back to basics. Whatever skills one has acquired before the workshop is where each individual will begin – to enact that mysterious event – that thing that happens when a “drawing comes to life”.

Note: As part of this masterclass, a public lecture entitled "Everything Trembles: Art and Complexity" by Power Boothe will be held at FPAC on November 15, 2025. Find more details here.

Rooted in tradition with an ear toward the future, contemporary folk duo Rakish embody earnest musical exploration and an infectious playfulness in their music. Fiddler Maura Shawn Scanlin, acclaimed for her expressive playing, was raised in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains. Her songwriting and clawhammer banjo technique hint at regional old-time ballads. Further north, guitarist Conor Hearn grew up steeped in the venerated Washington, D.C. Irish music scene and developed a keen interest in literature and poetry. The pair’s deep musical connection and unbridled love for pushing traditional sounds forward is striking. They refuse to be pigeonholed into one genre and are most comfortable occupying the in-between as they journey through Celtic and Americana styles, deftly showcasing how to bring forth something new from the deep well of tradition.
